Can You Read People Through Their Dogs?
Have you noticed that some dogs act strange around the nicest people ? In one of our previous blogs Dangerous Dog Breeds : Real or Not? we’ve discussed that its the environment and not the breed that defines a dogs personality. Lets be honest, some people hide their true identities. One may seem friendly and kind to others yet he or she morphs into total opposite behind closed doors. Staff at DoggyCrap noticed that a number of extremely friendly people own aggressive dogs. Furthermore, many pets may begin to act differently as the owners tone changes or speaks about a certain topic. This had us thinking. Can you read people through their dogs?
Dogs can read people
We’ve all been there, sad or heart broken, yet here comes your furry friend trying to comfort you. Dogs really are man’s best friend as researchers have shown they can recognize emotions in humans by combining information from different senses. They are the only creatures outside of humans who have been observed to have that ability.
Sasha, my German shepherd, was raised in the city so she loves to be around people. She never discriminates and loves belly rub from a stranger. Interestingly on rare occasions she will randomly bark at a total stranger for no apparent reason. Was he simply thinking about harming us? Although this can be an embarrassing episode in a public setting, no matter how many times I correct the behavior there always seems to be another months later.
Dog can sense your intentions. Even before you turn on the shower or touch his towel, your dog knows you intend to give him a bath and will immediately run for cover. The same goes for haircuts, nail trims and administering medicine. Sasha loves to lay on the bathroom tiles when people shower yet she runs and hides before we say its her bath time.
They can sense when you’re scared. A dog’s sensitive nose can pick up on subtle scents, such as adrenaline, that he associates with fear and danger. You may be on edge thinking you can contain the fear but the animal next to you is tense and ready for any threat to surface.
Amazingly, dogs can sense if you’re pregnant. Many owners report that their dog suddenly become much more protective, attentive, and loving. In most cases, when mothers introduce a new born child into the home for the first time, dogs will imminently understand that it must respect and protect the new member of the family.
Can we read dogs?
Study any trained professional and discover that they can spot a fight before it even happens. Trainers have a special gift of knowing when a dog feels calm or nervous. Body language such as position of the ears, curvature of the back or eye contact gives a trained professional clues as to what is really going on. He or she than corrects the issue before it even occurs! They understand that dogs speak in a silent language and one must develop an understanding to be a successful trainer.
Unfortunately the rest of us have a difficult time understanding dog behavior. We simply think that some dogs are nice and some are not so nice.. The average Joe however can read basic emotions. We can tell when they are sad or just want to go for a walk. We seem to know what scares them or if they are particularly uncomfortable. In addition, humans can tell if that four legged friend respects its owners and their boundaries. Sadly we can also tell if an animal is being abused by witnessing an animal that is petrified of its owner.
Did you know animal deaths are incredibly low during natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes? Wildlife seems to know that danger is right around the corner and will attempt to run to safety. Our pets at home might start to panic, running in circles trying to warn us in a dear attempt to raise awareness. Sadly, we know that something is up but never act on it.
Can You Read People By Their Dogs?
When I ventured off to the local park I noticed that one of the dogs would bark then immediately look at the owner with his head down and ears back. The owners were very nice and attended church every Sunday with the family. After getting to know them better I’ve discovered that the father would smack the dog in the head if it barked too loud inside the home. The irritating fact was that he casually claimed that he lightly hit the animal, causing no harm. He praised himself as a great family man totally against animal cruelty. Later that year he was arrested for animal abuse. If you spot signs of abuse, attempt to gather as much information as possible and report the issue to authorities.
On a brighter note, Jackson, a local pit bull, would start to bark and jump around if his owner began to talk about the football team he strongly disliked. One Sunday night we bumped into each other at a local restaurant/bar and there he was yelling at the television expressing his dislike of the opposite team. This really shows that dogs can in away give us clues about the other person and how they act. Dogs will get sad when you bring up an x partner. One might express their dislike toward the other person but that dog laying down quietly starting back at the owner may be saying otherwise.
Keep in mind that rescued dogs have already experienced an environment. Many untrained animals simply don’t understand what humans are looking for in a dog. This should not be confused with defining the owners personality. Just because a particular dog may dislike certain men due to abuse in the past does not mean the current owner is a bad person.
In short, yes you can read people by their dogs but only if you have a deep understanding of dog behavior and what is most likely causing it. With hundreds of variables, you should not jump to conclusions about a person. We know that dogs love us and want to comofrt us no matter the circumstance. If you however spot signs of abuse don’t be afraid to report it to the authorities.
